My friends at the North American State and Provincial Lotteries invited me to deliver this talk at the executive session in July 2013. This talk was scheduled very early in the morning, so I decided to begin with a lot of exciting examples of brilliant innovation from fields far outside of the lottery industry. Why? Because I wanted everyone in the audience to recognize the fact that blisteringly fast innovation is the norm in every industry — even the lottery! Unfortunately the North American lotteries have not kept pace with this rapid innovation, and as a result they have begun to lose the interest of younger audiences. In the second half of this talk, I share a long list of ideas for ways to improve lottery games, inspired by some of the brilliant breakthroughs in casual and social games. At the end of the talk I offer my perspective about the future of the lottery business.
